Plot Calendar
Aug. 31st, 2015 11:01 pmPast calendar months can be found in the archive.
If you're unsure whether or not the plot you have in mind will be allowed, please feel free to contact a metaplot mod individually, or through the mod contact page, and we will make sure to get any questions you have cleared up before you proceed.
If you want a spot on the plot calendar, you must have at least one entry in the OOC community (that contains actual planning and discussion) to link to. We will not accept links to plurks, and we will not accept OOC Community links that contain links to friends-locked plurks.
Player plots can not overlap with each other or with metaplot events. Player plots will be given priority on a first come, first served basis. Whoever gets their OOC stuff together first and claims the date with a comment here gets it.

gameplay requests
May. 31st, 2013 03:22 pmThis is the page to request things for your characters which need mod approval. Want them to open a business? Need to establish an NPC employee? This is for things that don't quite fit into F.A.Q. and aren't mod questions so much as character specific requests.
All approved requests will be unscreened.

shortlist for new characters
Apr. 30th, 2012 02:39 pmThe following must be completed in order to get community invites:
1. Grant access to
magistrated and
betenoire_admin.
2. Fill out the text box on the taken characters page.
3. Fill out the text box on the contact list page. This post is locked. So if you can't see it, we just haven't added you back yet. Give us a poke if it's been a while.
4. Read the rules and follow the instructions in the last rule.
Once you have done all of the above, you will receive invitations to the game communities. If you don't see the emails, you can manually check for your invitations here. If you choose to, you may also join the crack community -

A few things you should know about Bete Noire:
The Network:
The network encompasses all forms of communication, technological and magical. Phone conversations, the internet, magic mirrors, etc. Pretty much everything but physically handing a message to another person goes through the network. You can contact someone through a phone number, email address, or by simply knowing their name and letting the magic of the network find them for you.
The network can not be hacked. No exceptions.
It can't be used to trace someone who hasn't allowed your character access to their location. It can't be used to hack any physical machinery. The network will not inform you if someone is blocking your calls, has died, has left the city - think of it as sending emails to an address that's no longer being checked or leaving messages on a voicemail service that never fills up.
Network Devices:
The city will provide all new arrivals with a communications device. This device is not standardized. It will be something the character will recognize as a means of communication, and it will be something they know how to use.
For example: an Arthurian knight will not get a computer, a business man from the seventies will not get an iPhone, and a FBI agent will not get a magical spellbook.
However, once they are in the city, they can purchase whatever device they'd like, but they will have to actually make the purchase.
This is a perfect example of how a city provided device should appear to a PC. It's recognized as a phone, even if it's nicer than theirs.
Money:
All forms of currency are accepted in Bete Noire, and the city has no 'native' currency. You can use dollars, pounds sterling, credits, yen, precious metals and gems, the barter system, etc. There is no Bete Noire dollar, because there has never been a need for one. Since all NPC citizens and many PCs already know this, any unnamed NPC shopkeeper can explain it to your character if a PC doesn't beat them to it.
Bank accounts do not transfer to the city with you. If there's a million dollars in your account but only twenty in your pocket, only the twenty dollars will come with you. Better use it wisely!
Fourth-Walling:
It's not allowed.
The City's Influence:
Your character will become infected. The only question is how long it takes. The city drives those who live in in to give in to their darkest urges, specifically those to do with sex and violence. No character, no matter their stamina or strength of will or genetic makeup, can resist it indefinitely. After six months, nine at the outside, even the strongest individual will be tainted, or driven mad.
Now, we're not saying that this will turn your character into a mass murderer or a slut or change their sexual orientation. That's not the case at all, we promise! They have to already have the urge. The city just makes it a hell of a lot stronger, and rewards those who give in.
The Curse of Babel:
The city doesn't have it, meaning there's no written or spoken language barrier; Bete Noire is a city of universal understanding. (For a bit of supplemental reading, this link may help explain the Curse of Babel further.) Characters who use any words in a language other than English must have a translation for player convenience, even if it's a word everyone should know the meaning of. This can be done with hovertext or with a little OOC footnote at the bottom. This is to help ensure that we, as players, remember that Bete Noire is a city of universal understanding.
If you're at all unsure about anything gone over in this post, please don't hesitate to ask. We love answering your questions, and are here to be helpful.

(no subject)
Jan. 25th, 2012 08:33 amEven before the first thing, make sure you're ready to come with us. If you can't see this entry then you're definitely not on the list for the move yet. Get in touch with us so we can get that fixed.
First off, I'm going to strongly suggest to everyone that they either claim their comments or register an email to their openID. By doing this, you'll make sure that you get an email notification if someone replies to your older comments in any of the communities.
You can claim your comments by going here and filling in the livejournal address. A warning, read the email they send you carefully, especially if you're claiming more than one journal's worth of comments. Dreamwidth sent me an email asking me to claim Cho's comments with Jack's journal. I'm just glad I caught it before I clicked. It's not dangerous. As long as you read the email and make sure the two journals mentioned are the ones you want linked, you'll be fine.
If you don't want to claim your comments log in to dreamwidth with your character's livejournal openID. Then go into your account settings and enter an email address. Once You're logged in with an openID, you can also upload up to 15 icons if you want to. I would recommend uploading at least one, so it makes it easier to see who the tag is from at a glance.
-------------
Now, for the actual game stuff. Everyone needs tofriend grant access to the mod journals (yes, there are two now):
betenoire_admin and
magistrated. Subscribing is not enough, guys. Granting access it the equivalent of LJ friending. Subscribing just means you're watching the journals. I know how the whole subscribe/grant access to thing works, but having all current players in the 'mutually granted access' category makes it easier for the mods. I would suggest that you also subscribe to them, because they will be used more heavily than they were on LJ, but that's up to you.
Once you've done that, you need to check out the taken characters table and the contact list and make sure the information there is correct. If it is, comment and tell us so. If it's not, comment with the changes you'd like made. Either way, you must comment on the pages so we know you've checked them. No character journal will be let into the communities until they've done so.
Everyone also needs to go and read the game rules, even if you've already done so. Then you need to comment to the post to show us you've read them, as stated in the final rule.
And... that's pretty much it. I hope you guys are excited for the move as I am. I know I was on the fence before, but I've been really encouraged by the awesome customer service I've gotten from dreamwidth staff so far, and their overall attitude toward RPers.
To recap:
1. grant access to both mod journals (
betenoire_admin and
magistrated)
2. comment on contact list (even if the info is correct, you have to comment)
3. comment on taken page (ditto)
4. read the rules (all the way to the end. they've changed a little)

Reserves page: OPEN
Jul. 29th, 2011 12:55 amRemember: reserves are required to submit an application!
Rules (PLEASE READ):
→ Reserves are open for the last three days of every month.
→ Reserves last until the next reserve cycle opens. No extensions will be granted.
→ If you reserve a fandom character (this is anyone from an established canon) for one month and do not submit an application for that month, you will not be able to reserve them for the subsequent month. If your application is declined or if revisions are requested, you will be able to re reserve and re-apply in the subsequent period. This is to avoid character squatting.
→ In case of an original character, we still require a reserve.
→ Each player may have a maximum of two reserves at any given time. However, you may only submit one application per month.
→ In the case of multiple reserves per character, no applications will be judged until the first reserver submits their application. Then the applications will be judged based on individual merit, in the order they were reserved, not in competition with each other.
→ Once a complete and correct reserve request has been made, the reserve is valid. If your request is not complete or correct, you will be informed by a mod.
→ Official game time is Pacific time. That's the timezone with Los Angeles in it on this map.

Application
Oct. 6th, 2009 09:50 pmRules (PLEASE READ):
→ A reserve is required to submit an application. Any application from an unreserved character will be automatically declined.
→ Post all applications as a series of comments to this post. Please do not link to an application in another community or in a journal.
→ All comments are screened, though apps may be unscreened after acceptance or rejection with the applicant's permission.
→ Applications never close, however, they will only be accepted for current reserves, which expire and reset on the third to last day of every month. For more details, please see the reserve page.
For current players wishing to either amend their accepted application, or canon bump their character, this is also the place to submit those proposed changes.
NOTICE: App processing time tends to run pretty long in this game. We really value being thorough, and if the mods are unfamiliar with your canon, odds are we're reviewing a fair amount of it (however much we need to get a feel for the character). We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause! If you have any questions about the status of your app, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We promise we don't bite.
